The Rabies Reality

Who is most susceptible to rabies? Most warm-blooded animals are vulnerable to contracting the virus, rabies. Medical experts and veterinarians note that certain species are more immune to rabies than other animals. The most prevalent way to contract rabies is via a nip from a rabid animal. While there are a wealth of varied symptoms, rabies is an incurable disease with an inevitable death as the outcome. Fortunately, the virus is highly preventable through vaccination.



The official name of the dogs we call pitbulls is the American staffordshire terrier. Pitbulls have been the preferred pet of many famous people including Fred Astaire, Vin Diesel, Alicia Silverstone, Michael J. Fox, and James Caan.


As a result, a rabies vaccination means a matter of life and death for one's chihuahua. Pets that are vaccinated have a reduced chance of contracting the terminal virus. In the United State, rabies vaccination is mandatory for all DOGS. However, approximately, only 50 percent of all canines are vaccinated. Depending on the local legislation, various municipalities require cats to be vaccinated as well. Certain reports suggest that only ten percent of the feline population is vaccinated.



The American Kennel Club recognizes more than 150 breeds? Segmented into seven different breed types, all breed possess unique temperaments, physical characteristics as well as a rich background in history.


Dogs should be vaccinated at the age of three to four months. At the age of one, they should receive another vaccination and again at three years. The standard vaccination protocol has proven effective in not only DOGS but cats as well. From city-to city, county-to-county and different veterinarians, annual or bi-annual vaccinations are mandated.



Labrador retrievers, as their name indicates, were bred to retrieve things. However, most people think of them today as retrieving sticks, or other similar objects. In reality, they were originally bred to help fishermen by retrieving fishing nets!


In the realm of diagnosing a chihuahua with rabies, the brain is examined via microscopic assessment. Medical advancements are beginning to utilize the skin and blood samples in clinical trials.



The basenji could really be considered more like a cat than a dog. Not only is it the only breed of dog that does not bark, but is also a meticulous cleaner. Unlike other dogs, the basenji actually licks itself clean, just like a cat!


Essentially, there is not a cure, therapy or treatment for rabies. In chihuahuas, there have been a few isolated cases where canine have survived the infection; however, the cases are far and few between.



The smallest breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Chihuahua, which stands six to nine inches at the top of the shoulders and generally weighs two to six pounds. Their size makes them excellent travel companions.





Yorkshire terriers are very tenacious. In fact, A 12-pound Yorkshire Terrier named Oliver once defended an elderly woman from an 80-pound Akita. The woman escaped to safety and Oliver the yorkie survived with only nine stitches.
