How to Stop a Chihuahua from Barking

Sometimes stopping your chihuahua from barking is as easy as fulfilling its needs. If it needs food or water, for instance, it may just require some attention from you. On the other hand, your chihuahua may bark constantly out of frustration over a certain thing or a specific person. This is the sort of behavior that you may want to change.

There is absolutely no difference between an Australian silky terrier, silky toy terrier and a silky terrier. They are all the same breed, but have different names in different countries, specifically in Australia, Canada and the United States.

One of the best ways to stop your chihuahua from barking is actually to teach him to bark. By first teaching your chihuahua to bark on command, then teaching him to stop barking on command, you can greatly reduce his barking. The best way to accomplish this is through the use of a food reward system. Once you've used food to train the chihuahua to bark on command though, the next step is a bit harder. It's important to begin rewarding your chihuahua when he is quiet, but it's not as easy to notice a quiet chihuahua as it is to notice a barking chihuahua. You should be patient and pay close attention to your chihuahua's behavior for several weeks in order to reward him at the right times.

Chihuahuas, because of their size, are often treated like babies, but they actually do have something in common with human babies. Chihuahuas are born with a "molera", also known as a soft spot, on their heads, exactly like a human baby. Usually the soft spot closes as the dog matures.

If your chihuahua is barking because of a specific person, such as the mail person, involve the person in the training. A good way to do that is to leave chihuahua treats in a pre-specified area outside of your house. If the person the chihuahua has an issue with gives your chihuahua a treat every time they come to your house it will turn into a positive experience.

The problem with that type of collar is that it can be hard to tell if they are working properly, unless you want to try it on yourself. Another type of anti-bark collar uses a scent, such as citronella, that the chihuahua dislikes. This method can be quite effective without actually hurting the chihuahua.
