How Often Should I Walk My Chihuahua?

The answer to how often you should walk your chihuahua depends on many things. It's different for every DOG.

The afghan hound ranks as least intelligent breed of dog. They are cute, friendly, loyal and fun, but they usually require 80 to 100 repetitions to learn a single command. Afghan hounds are a bad choice if you are looking for a dog that's easy to train, but they are great if you have patience.

First, it depends greatly on breed type and breed size. Smaller DOGS may get tired faster than larger DOGS. Also, some breeds are bred to be more active than others. For instance, herding DOGS, such as border collies, tend to be high-energy and require a lot of exercise.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the longest lived dog was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey. The dog lived to be 29. This case was considered unusual since smaller dogs generally live longer. The chihuahua is actually the breed that tends to live the longest.

Another factor is how much exercise the chihuahua gets on your own property. If you have a large yard that the chihuahua spends a lot of time playing in then the chihuahua may not physically need to go on walks as much as a chihuahua that stays mostly in the house. Family or other pets can also contribute to your individual chihuahua's exercise. Although playing with the family is no substitute for a good walk, it can help to lower a chihuahua's energy level a little bit. If you have a chihuahua that tends to get overly excited when out on walks, it might be a good idea to try to tire it out just a little bit at home through family activities before taking it on a walk.

The basenji, an African wolf dog, is the only breed of dog that cannot bark. Instead of barking, it makes an odd yodel-like noise. Due to this fact, the basenji is also sometimes known as an African barkless dog.

It's also important to consider not just your chihuahua's physical requirements, but also its mental requirements. As humans, most of us do not like to be cooped up in our houses all the time. We get bored seeing and doing the same things over and over. Chihuahuas are no different. A chihuahua that isn't getting out enough will become bored, frustrated and sometimes even destructive. For instance, just as we might chew our nails when bored, a chihuahua might chew a couch.

Chihuahuas, because of their size, are often treated like babies, but they actually do have something in common with human babies. Chihuahuas are born with a "molera", also known as a soft spot, on their heads, exactly like a human baby. Usually the soft spot closes as the dog matures.

Remember that chihuahuas can be just as bored on the same walk all the time as they can be when they are not going for walks at all. In fact, walking at the same exact time in the same exact place every day will probably start to bore you quickly too. It's important to change your walk up a bit once in a while and expose your chihuahua and yourself to new things.

The Papillon is a small dog breed with distinctive large, fringed ears that earned it its name, the French word for butterfly. The Papillon is believed to be one of the oldest of the toy breeds.

While there is the expectation that certain breeds need more exercise than others, each chihuahua is an individual. Evaluate how your individual chihuahua reacts to walks, as well as to certain amounts of time in the house, and adjust your walking schedule and the length of each walk accordingly. You and your chihuahua will both be happier and healthier that way.

Many people think that the kerry blue terrier is the national dog of Ireland. Actually, the Irish government never has given this designation to any breed. Michael Collins, one of Irelands most famous patriots, introduced legislation to elevate the Kerry Blue, or the Irish Blue Terrier as they were then called, to the national dog of Ireland. After his murder, the interest in the initiative was lost.
