Can a Good Chihuahua be Found in DOG Shelters?

Many people feel like shelter chihuahuas are not as good as other DOGS. They feel that shelter chihuahuas are often there because they are sick or vicious or otherwise undesirable. The truth is, if you know what to look for, yes, a good chihuahua can definitely be found at a DOG shelter.



The largest and the smallest dogs to live in the White House were both there during the tenure of president James Buchanan. The president had a Newfoundland named Lara. His niece, Harriet Lane, had a tiny toy terrier named Punch.


There are actually quite a few advantages to adopting most shelter DOGS. First, many shelter DOGS are already housebroken. Second, unlike puppies, older shelter DOGS are already up to date on all of their shots and spayed or neutered. Third, many shelter DOGS already know a few basic commands, which makes them generally easier to train.



Male Irish wolfhounds are usually at least 32 to 34 inches tall and females are usually around 30 inches tall. This makes the Irish wolfhound the tallest breed. Although a few other dogs, such as the great dane, come close to equalling that height.


It's important to note that every shelter DOG is not suited for every family. Sometimes shelter employees do not know the full history of the chihuahua. A chihuahua that has been abused may react in odd ways to things that you, as the new owner, may not be aware of. There are some easy ways to avoid that and be sure that the chihuahua you get is right for your family.



Chow Chows have very unusual mouths. When they are born they look normal enough. However, by the age of about 8 weeks, their gums and tongues go from pink to an odd shade of bluish-black.


First, examine the shelter itself. Make sure that you choose to adopt from a shelter where the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. If the staff is unfriendly or the facility is unclean, choose another shelter.



Originating in Germany, the name Affenpinscher means, "monkey-like terrier". However, in France the breed is described as the "Diablotin Moustachu" or "moustached little devil". Both describe the appearance and attitude of this delightful breed.


Also, if possible, get the complete history of the chihuahua. Ask where it came from and how it got there. The history of the chihuahua will tell you a lot about its personality.



The phal�ne is essentially the same thing as a papillon, except that it has dropped spaniel-like ears. within the first couple of months after birth the ears will either lay flat or raise up permanently. The AKC considers the Phal�ne and the Papillon to be the same breed.


Whether you can get the chihuahua's history or not, it's good to just observe all of the DOGS at the shelter. Visit the shelter a couple of times with the whole family. Observe how the DOGS react to each family member. That will be a good indication of things to come.



German shepherd dogs are great working dogs. They are often used as police dogs, rescue dogs and guides for the blind. In fact, one of them, a guide dog named Orient, once led a blind hiker the entire 2100 mile length of the Appalachian Trail.


By following this simple advice, as well as your own instincts, you can easily find a fabulous shelter DOG.



The largest breed of dog that is recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Irish Wolfhound, which stands thirty to 30 to 35 inches at the top of the shoulders and weighs 105 to 125 pounds.
