Airfare Travel Chihuahua Checklist

Flying with your chihuahua requires a little more planning than traveling solo or with a human travel partner. To simplify what you need to do, use the following helpful chihuahua travel check list.



The bichon frise breed is quite old. Originally they used to belong only to kings and queens. However, eventually they became known for their abilty to learn tricks and for their excellent sense of balance. As a result, they gained a reputation for being excellent as circus dogs.


1. If you plan to travel with your chihuahua, book a direct flight. Not to mention, it will reduce the possibility of your chihuahua being mishandled by baggage staff or being left behind. During your booking reservation inquire about the airline's restrictions on transporting animals.



German shepherd dogs are great working dogs. They are often used as police dogs, rescue dogs and guides for the blind. In fact, one of them, a guide dog named Orient, once led a blind hiker the entire 2100 mile length of the Appalachian Trail.


2. Set up an appointment with your chihuahua's veterinarian for a check-up, Update your canine's vaccinations if they are not current. While at the veterinarian, coordinate the details of obtaining a health certificate from the veterinarian. The health certificate must be dated within 10 days of your departure.



French poodles were originally used as hunting dogs, but, because their thick coats proved a problem in the bush and water, their owners started clipping them. They left hair on the ankles to protect against rheumatism, which is why poodles sometimes appear to have unusual haircuts.


3. Buy a USDA-approved shipping crate adequately sized to be conducive for your chihuahua's travel (stand, sit and turn) around in comfortably. (You can get a great one cheap at http://www.scrooby.com )



Inbreeding causes about 3 out of every 10 dalmations suffer from some sort of hearing loss. The good news is that, like deaf people, they can easily be taught to recognize words in sign language and still make excellent companions.


4. Prior to the day you leave, remember to freeze a small tray or dish of water for your chihuahua. This will prevent the water from spilling during boarding/loading. Affix a diminutive packet/pouch of dried food outside your chihuahua's crate.



Alaskan Malamutes are known for being friendly and loyal. In fact, Chewbacca, the hairy Wookiee in the Star Wars movies and the name of the character of indiana Jones were both inspired by George Lucas' loyal dog Indiana, an Alaskan Malamute.


5. For identification purposes, tape an updated photograph of your chihuahua onto the top of the crate. In case your pet breaks out of the carrier, the photo can be a lifesaver. (Do not forget to place a photo of your chihuahua in your wallet.



Paul McCartney, of Beatles fame, was very fond of his shetland sheepdog. In fact, at the end of the song "A Day in the Life" Mr. McCartney inserted an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, for his shetland sheepdog.


6. Before you leave for the airport, remember to place a collar as well as an identification tag on your chihuahua. In the event of a canine escape, the collar should include destination information in it.



The Lowchen, a small, somewhat rare breed of dog, is native to France. It's called "petit chien lion" or, "little lion dog". This is due to its fur growth, as it resembles the mane of a lion.
