Should I Crate Train My Chihuahua?

Although not all chihuahuas actually need to be crate trained, proper crate training can have many benefits for any chihuahua or owner.

Rhodesian ridgebacks have an actual ridge along the top of their backs. The ridge is made up of forward-growing hairs. This ridge gives the rhodesian ridgeback a unique and easily recognizable look.

Many chihuahuas have severe separation anxiety because chihuahuas are pack animals. As a result, when humans leave a chihuahua home alone, sometimes the chihuahua will chew or destroy furniture and other objects. Crating a chihuahua for a few hours when it is home alone will help to reduce anxiety-related destruction.

Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems.

Another benefite of crate trianing is that wild chihuahuas live in dens. These dens provide protection from the weather, comfort and security. Crate training, when done properly, can give a domestic chihuahua the same sense of security.

Pekingese dogs were sacred to the emperors of China for more than 2,000 years. They are one of the oldest breeds of dogs in the world. Commoners in Imperial China were forbidden to own Pekingese dogs.

Another good use for crate training is transportation. If your chihuahua is trained to go into its crate on command then it can be taken on a trip or to the vet with ease.

The Bloodhound doesn't need to smell blood to find someone who is lost. It is said that his name instead means blooded hound, or aristocratic. They actually track people because people leave a trail of skin cells with their own unique odor wherever they go.

When you first begin crate training a chihuahua, it's important not to lock the chihuahua in the crate or use the crate as a punishment in any way. The object is to get the chihuahua to want to go into his crate when he needs to. It should feel comforting, like a human's bedroom. If you are going to be home with your chihuahua the crate should be left open so that the chihuahua has free access to his crate. This will allow him to get used to the crate. Over time he will actually enjoy spending time in his crate, even when he doesn't have to.

An American foxhound became one of the most amazing mothers in the dog world when she set a record for the largest litter of puppies in 1944. She had not one, not two, not even ten, but twenty-three puppies!

The only situation where crate training should not be used is if nobody is going to be available to let the chihuahua out of the crate for a certain amount of time. Chihuahuas like to keep their beds clean, so they do not like to go to the bathroom anywhere near their beds. A smaller puppy generally has to go every two or three hours. An older chihuahua can generally wait for up to five or six hours. Therefore, a crate should never be used for long-term confinement.

Pharaoh Hounds have an unusual feature. They are the only breed of dogs that "blushes". They do this when they are excited or happy. When they "blush" their ears, nose and eyes will become pink.
